Operations Management Assessment That Goes Beyond the Essay: Evidence, Decisions, Outcomes

Traditional essay-based assessment cannot capture operations competency. Learn how decision-based simulation assessment produces richer evidence for students and tutors alike.

The operations management essay is a fixture of business school assessment that has survived largely on inertia. It is markable, scalable, and familiar. What it is not — if we are honest about the competencies that operations roles actually require — is particularly valid. This is not a radical proposition — it is exactly what professional operations practitioners do every day. The gap is that very few university programmes have had the infrastructure to build that assessment format at scale, and most have defaulted to essays as a result.
